What constitutes a post workout meal?

A post workout meal is a combination of protein and carbohydrates taken right after a workout. The meal you eat this time is the most important for building muscle and replenishing energy sources.

The first thing your body needs is an instant supply of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Moreover, they are used by the body for making muscles, hormones, bones, etc. Exercise depletes amino acids. You replenish it by consuming protein. Any fast acting protein such as egg whites or whey protein would suffice.

The second thing you need is carbohydrates. Your body uses carbohydrates to make glucose which is the fuel that gives you energy. Exercise draws upon your body’s stores of glucose called glycogen. Glycogen is the storage form of sugar in the body. The preferred carbohydrate is a complex carbohydrate like rice for a post workout meal.

Don’t delay to feed your hungry muscles. Take advantage of the anabolic window and satiate your body.

  1. Now i am waiting for this story to continue, Sir it would help what if you could tell what qty of protein and carbs we should intake after our workout, After cardio or our friday drills we tend to get even more hungry- What should be the ratio of carbs and protein intake then?

  2. As I say a complex carbohydrate like rice suits. White rice, however, should come good. It is complex and at the sametime fast acting. A scoop of whey with carbohydrate is good. The quantity would depend on the individual, however, 20 to 30 grams would suffice.
