Training at a Ripe Old age

As you can see the old man in the video is using straps to lift weights. He is also performing the deadlift from a rack which is easy, relatively. I don’t recommend the use of straps, for it will not help with your grip strength. Likewise, generally, I don’t recommend rack deadlifts unless there is a purpose attached to it. For example, training when injured where complete range of motion isn’t possible.
Is the use of straps or the rack deadlift unwarranted for this 82 years old man? My answer is NO. What really matters his persistence to train even at this ripe old age. The use of straps or the rack is secondary. Who knows he might be ailing from knee or hip joint arthritis?
What is the take home message and what message does it give to people who are doubtful about working out regularly and want to quit? It is the importance of showing up to workout. As Ross Enamait says, “You may not have all of the answers when you begin, but by forcing yourself to work, you’ll certainly be closer to finding you.” This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes that hang on my gym wall. Thomas Edison says, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” I hope this message provides you some food for thought.
