Stress and Cholesterol

Stress results in the production of adrenaline, which increases oxidation rate and produces free radicals that can damage arteries. Adrenaline is a stress hormone that is released to thwart stress in the body. Yet when adrenaline is produced unabated it wreaks havoc in the body.

Chronic stress increases the body’s production of cholesterol. Cholesterol serves as the building material for stress hormones that are made by our adrenal glands. In other words, when you are stressed you produce stress hormone which in turn require cholesterol for their production. Also, stress hormones produce more sugar in order to provide the body with instant energy to tackle the stressful situation. The high sugar levels, however, often are not used up by the body and eventually are converted to fatty acids and cholesterol.

Moreover, stress can also force people toward unhealthy eating habits and lifestyles: Smoking, drinking, and eating unhealthy foods. It is unlikely that you will indulge in healthy habits when you are stressed. These unhealthy habits are well known to increase cholesterol levels in the body.
