Does Age Matter?

There are quite a few individuals who have crossed the 40 mark (age) and many more who are nearing 40 at Ironcult. Many have doubted whether they can be working out intensely: Moving, lifting, carrying big weights, and whether they can run/sprint at this age? We have defied all those doubts. It is heartening to watch them frequent the gym for they have rediscovered their health, fitness, and body composition which has changed for the better.

At the same time it disturbs me when I see many individuals taking exercise for granted. Many of us can be at our physical best till we reach the age of 50, for our athletic abilities may decline after the 50 mark. But it doesn’t mean that we should not work out after the 50 mark. All I am stating is that your athletic abilities may decline, but there is no reason for you to be physically active especially weight train. In fact, lifting weights when you age stalls the aging process, for resistance training builds muscle. You should know that aging causes muscle atrophy/ loss, so lifting weights is the one of the best means to build and preserve muscle.

In the recently (2011) held Wimbledon matches, a 40 year old woman from Japan named Kimiko Date-Krumm was at her absolute best and truly frightened the chances of Venus Williams winning the match in the second round. And everybody lauded her effort. So you can see that she has defied her age.

You can view some of the captivating moments in that match in the below video, and ask yourself how a 40 year old woman can be at her physical best?
