Voltaire’s quote that Hangs on the Gym Wall.

“Indolence is sweet, but its consequences bitter.”

I believe this quote completely embraces and addresses what is occurring now. I feel it carries the crux of the whole situation. I am captivated by the quote. I have read it several times already. And will continue to read it.

Arthur C. Clarke says, “How can it be, in a world where half the things a man knows at 20 are no longer true at 40—and half the things he knows at 40 hadn’t been discovered when he was 20?” Well, this is true now. Yet Voltaire’s statement has stood true and will hold true forever, though it was said many centuries ago.

Indolence seems to be the cause for many of the ailments we are facing now. To top that, we incessantly eat, and that exacerbates the situation. We may temporarily feel good, but do we know the long term results? Do we know that inactivity is one of the major causes of obesity and all other life-style diseases such as diabetes and blood pressure? “A man’s health can be judged by which he takes two at a time – pills or stairs.” Joan Welsh. I believe the Welsh’s statement accurately sums up well the view of Voltaire. Now, you have to choose the less trodden path. That may not be nice to look at. However, that is the one you have to embrace for better health and living. Or choose the often trodden path and be ready to swallow your pills for better health and living. What an irony.
